Biography
Gary Rogers, born in Rotherham, New Zealand, grew up in the small North Canterbury village of Culverden and was educated at St. Bedes College in Christchurch. At 18 he joined the New Zealand fire service working as a professional fire fighter for six years. During this time he discovered his hobby of photography, leading to an apprenticeship under the Hungarian born master photographer John Ambrose. Gary started his career as still photographer for TV studios in Sydney, Australia, opened his own studio specialising in fashion, TV news stills and theatre and during the "Swinging sixties" became well known throughout Australasia touring with International pop stars shooting for publicity agencies and record covers. In his spare time he worked as a musician himself playing drums in modern Jazz groups in the Christchurch area.
In 1969 Gary was invited to attend an International photographers seminar in Munich, Germany, as representative for New Zealand, after which he worked in the Constanze Foto-Atelier, Hamburg. During this period he won the European advertising catalogue photo prize, together with a Swiss and and an Italian collegue. In 1971 he joined the editorial staff of "Schöner Wohnen" until 1974. He then spent two years in Oslo, Norway, helping to develop a new interior magazine during which time and through his travels around Scandinavia he became a great lover of this part of the world. Consequently he built a holiday house in a small mountain village in the area of Valdres, Norway.
In 1976 Gary he was invited back to "Schöner Wohnen" specializing in photo stories of gardens, architecture, food, design and life style. He travels well over 100.000 km a year to all corners of the world. In 1984 he won the "Silver Plume Award" including honorary citizenship from the Island Republic of Malta for best photo story of the land and in 1999 the "Features photographer of the year" award from "The GardenWriters Guild" for the book "The Garden at Chatsworth". Today his assignments include work for the magazines "Schöner Wohnen", "S/W Decoration" "Häuser" and "Living at Home" and he supplies photos to the major Garden book publishers in Great Britain and Germany and various photo agencies.
